Rough Diamonds

OBJECTIVES

To understand the characteristics of rough diamonds and how the rough diamond market operates.

TEACHING METHODS AND RESOURCES

  • Training provided by a professional gemmologist
  • Use of gemmological equipment: loupe, binocular microscope, UV lamp, polariscope
  • Practical tuition with observation of a collection of natural rough diamonds of various shapes and qualities

LEARNING ASSESSMENT METHOD 

  • Knowledge assessment
  • Certificate issued at the end of training

PROGRAMME

DAY 1
  • Geology and description of rough diamonds: from formation to exportation (extraction methods, world diamond mines)
  • Understand the rough diamond industry: organisation, major diamond producers and multiple intermediaries
  • Culture and practices of mining operators, local buying and selling counters
DAY 2 AND 3
  • Exportation to international Diamond Bourses
  • Rough diamonds sorting in the diamond industry and in Jewellery: characteristics
  • Study of the 4C’s of rough diamond
DAY 4
  • The 4C’s of polished diamonds and fluorescence. Learn to observe in detail the cut of a diamond.
  • Introduction to reading an international gemmology certificate
  • Introduction to international professional vocabulary
DAY 5
  • Definitions, gemmology and the diamond market realities
